Most of you remember Samuel J Wurzelbacher aka Joe the
Plumber back in the 2008 election right? For Republicans he was hope (if you
believe in all that) and conservatives listened to him. So much so, John McCain
loved him too and used his opinions and his name every day on the campaign
trail.
Well my friends, I think Joe the Plumber may have gone just
a tad too far when it comes to his opinion on the right to bear arms in the United
States. According to Sam in a political video he’s put out (he’s a nominee for
Ohio’s ninth congressional district) his latest words are “In 1939, Germany
established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, 6 million Jews and 7 million others
unable to defend themselves, were exterminated.” Joe the Plumber has now blamed
the Holocaust on gun control in 1939 Germany.
I read about this in a post on the Times News Feed in an
article written by Olivia B. Waxman, “Joe the Plumber Blames Gun Control for
the Holocaust.”
In Waxman’s article (link below) you must see the snazzy
video embedded in the story where Joe the Plumber offers up statistics while he
loads a rifle, aims and shoots—well, defenseless fruit. He then turns to the camera
and says “I love America.” I guess he loves America so much because we have no
gun control.
I remember when stand-up comedian Chris Rock said he thought
guns were okay but bullets should cost $5,000 and he had a point.
Now I’m not saying people shouldn’t be allowed to own guns,
but to use them as a political vote-for-me angle? I’m not so sure.
I was at my niece’s wedding in Ohio last weekend and her
biological dad who is no longer married to my sister told me he was “packing a
380 in his tux.” I thought who brings a gun to a wedding (and no it wasn’t a shotgun
wedding). Apparently, his girlfriend also packs—but at least she was nice
enough not to tell me what she packs.
I do love America and I’m glad we do have the right to bear
arms but come on Joe the Plumber—have you lost your mind? Of course, in Ohio,
gun packing is very popular but so is prejudice so maybe old Joe the Plumber
will win on that platform alone!
